Sustainability is an increasing focus for many modern homeowners, with plenty putting it as one of their priorities during daily living. There are many reasons why you may choose to lower your energy consumption and many ways you can lower it. One common solution can be found in improving the energy efficiency of your home. Working on heat insulation can considerably reduce your consumption notably through changing your windows and doors. Here’s how.
How windows can be energy efficient
Windows is one of the most effective tools available in your home when it comes to energy efficiency. Good quality double and triple-glazed windows are incredible at retaining heat, meaning you’ll need to rely less on manual means of heating your home, such as radiators. Energy efficient windows are those with a u value of 1.4W/m²K or less or those with a window energy rating (WER) in Band B. Windows can also reduce energy consumption by letting in more natural light, which reduces the need to have lights turned on every second of the day. You can especially maximise the use of natural light in the summer when daylight hours are longest.
How doors can be energy efficient
Alongside windows, doors can also be energy efficient. Energy efficient doors are those with a U-value of 1.4W/m²K or less or those with a door energy rating (DER) in Band B. This rating means that the heat transfer from inside to outside via your door is slow and it’s a case of the lower the better. A u value of 1.0W/m²K, for example, is more energy efficient than a door with a u value of 1.4W/m²K. This, again, reduces the need to rely on your heating system, saving you energy and money in the long term.
