Navigating the vast array of window options can be daunting for homeowners, and with so many styles and designs to choose from, finding the perfect windows for your period property can feel like a huge task.
However, at Bereco, we can help. With over 20 years’ experience, Bereco has been setting the standard for premium timber windows and doors in the UK. Our commitment to quality, coupled with exceptional customer service, has made us a trusted choice for homeowners and professionals alike.
In this blog post, we’ll explore what sets flush casement windows apart from other styles and look at what makes them an excellent choice, especially for those who live in a period property, a listed building or in a Conservation area.
What are flush casement windows?
Boasting a minimalist look, flush casement windows, as the name suggests are an elegant and simple window style in which the sash sits flush within the window frame.
In this they differ from a lipped casement window where the sash overlaps the frame. Originally seen in properties dating from the 19th century, flush casement windows (traditionally constructed with timber frames) will allow plenty of light into your rooms and perfectly compliment period properties from a wide range of eras as well as looking stunning in more contemporary buildings.
What materials are commonly used in period property windows?
Timber is the material most often used in period property windows, as this timeless material has been used for centuries in homes nationwide. Many period windows also feature mouldings and bars for an authentic look.
Timber window frames are continually favoured for their durability and aesthetic appeal, contributing to the charm and character of period homes while providing adequate insulation and structural integrity.
Strength and durability
Homeowners may have concerns that timber windows won’t stand the test of time, but at Bereco, we manufacture our flush casement windows from certified sustainably sourced engineered laminated timber for a long lifespan and outstanding durability.
Each section of timber is carefully treated with a specialist basecoat, and we’re very proud that our windows can last up to 60 years – twice as long as uPVC windows. For complete peace of mind, we offer a 30-year warranty for our timber, so you can relax in the knowledge your new windows will be keeping you safe and warm for years to come.
Performance & energy efficiency
Our flush casement windows may look the part in your period home, but their performance is fit for modern living with unparalleled thermal efficiency and thermal performance.
Choose from double or triple-glazing, both of which boast impressive U-values. Our 16mm slimline double-glazing units are internally glazed and incorporate a comprehensive drainage and ventilation system.
These units achieve an impressive centre pane U-value as low as 1.2W/m²K, ensuring exceptional energy efficiency while maintaining compliance with building regulations. And if you live on a busy road, or near a train line, we offer a range of acoustic glazing options to help ensure your home is a tranquil haven for you and your family.
Will flush sash casement windows be secure?
At Bereco, we don’t just provide beautiful windows – we also provide peace of mind. Accredited by Secured by Design and certified to Part Q, our flush casement windows feature advanced security features like multi-point locking systems, secure night vents, and child safety restrictors, making them among the most secure on the market.
Are flush casement windows right for my period property?
Their suitability for a range of period properties and buildings in conservation areas is where flush casement windows from Bereco really come into their own. From Victorian villas to Georgian townhouses, our flush casement windows are crafted to blend with the unique architectural features of Conservation areas and listed buildings, making them ideal when considering heritage windows.
There are plenty of customisation options to help you find the perfect period property windows that match your home’s style. If you are seeking a particular colour for your windows you can choose from RAL Classic, RAL Design, NCS and BS colour charts or match to Farrow & Ball, Earthborn or Fired Earth colour collections. And whether you prefer an ornate monkey tail or a classic bar handle, we have a range of handles and stays to complement your windows beautifully.
Our Traditional Range is often approved for use in conservation areas, and was the perfect choice for Thrum Mill, Northumberland which featured on Channel 4’s Old House, New Home. The property is Grade II listed and there were 29 restrictions in total, meaning the size of the window openings couldn’t be increased. With the owners still wanting as much light as possible to come into the rooms, as well as making the most of their views over the river outside, the slim frames of our windows delivered maximum glazing areas while still conforming to the period aesthetic.
The mill’s owner Margaret Hedley commented: “We are delighted with the windows – they look fantastic and everyone at Bereco has been so helpful. We were reassured by their experience and knowledge of Grade II planning restrictions”.
